News Update – April 22

Easton and Martyr Worthy Cricket Club Update

The good weather in April has enabled our outdoor training to commence. The Senior players are training on a Thursday evening at the David Roth Cricket Ground – the square has been prepared for the first of our pre-season friendlies; with the first competitive match being the Club vs Tichborne CC on Sunday April 24th in the National Village Cup.

All Juniors’ training will commence outdoors during the week beginning Monday April 25th. If you would like further details on this please contact Rhi Kerr on the email provided below.

Women / Girls Update

The Ladies’ section of the Club continues to grow from strength to strength – from the Under 9s Girls’ team all the way up to the Ladies’ squad, they are awaiting the 2022 summer season with much anticipation, aiming to build upon 2021’s unrivalled successes.

Last year EMWCC hosted the inaugural ‘Golden Bat’ tournament at the start of the season. Inviting local rival teams to get the post covid play kick started. Captained by Charlie Gloyn and with their coach Mark Low at the helm, the Ladies enjoyed a string of successful friendly matches, culminating in winning the closing end of season tournament at IBM Hursley, undefeated.

The fun day in September celebrated this growing section of the Club and marked the season’s achievements with a BBQ and mother and daughter pairs competition. Matches were played in full inflatable fancy dress costumes!

Over the winter the ladies have not been resting on their laurels. They have kept up practice by entering the fast paced Indoor League at Dummer Cricket Centre and came a close second in their group. Winter training has been underway for the U9, U11 and U13 Girls’ squads and they are match ready!

For the 2022 summer season the Ladies have entered the local W10 League and each of the Girls’ squads have Cup and League matches to play. The key ethos is to learn and master the basic skills of cricket, but above all to be inclusive and have lots of fun. The Ladies / Girls section welcomes new players, so do get in touch.

Club Profile – Ian Stuart, Our Professional Coach

Ian can often be seen in the nets, either coaching cohorts of club players or his clients through his coaching academy, Coaching for Greater Understanding (CFGU).

Ian first honed his skills as a youngster in his native Natal in South Africa. Whilst then studying at Exeter University he played for Exeter and represented the English Universities. He has represented Dorset in the Minor Counties Championship and Sutton CC in the Surrey Championship League. In South Africa he captained and played for Pinetown CC in their Premier League. More latterly Ian has represented Hampshire Over 50s and occasionally turns out for an EMWCC XI.

Ian has an extensive coaching portfolio.  His qualifications include an English Cricket Board (ECB) Level 3 coach and more recently an International Elite Coach Course. In 2000 Ian was the European Development Manager for the International Cricket Council (ICC). He has coached within various Hampshire players’ pathways; he headed up the Hampshire Emerging Player Programme for 5 years and for 30 years has been an ECB Coach Developer, tutoring within the Hampshire Coach Development Programme.

Additionally, Ian coaches the Hampshire visually impaired and blind cricketers; a role he feels is a privilege, working with passionate cricketers that show incredible fortitude and positivity towards learning, participating and competing.

Ian has taught in various local schools and runs his own coaching academy CFGU, with the philosophy of the ‘holistic development’ of each individual, aiming to sustain their love, learning and passion for the game into adult life. Ian observed that recently 7 players all educated at Henry Beaufort School had represented EMWCC’s 1st XI.

Ian reports he has coached at EMWCC for over 18 years and has seen considerable development during that time. The wonderful facilities at the club are testament to so many volunteers who have held positions within both the Junior and Senior sections. Without this volunteer workforce, the Club could not have sustained its ongoing developments nor provided so much for players to enjoy, through playing for a truly supportive and special Club.
