News Update – May 2024

On Saturday April 7th members from all sections of EMWCC assembled to tackle Spring maintenance and cleaning at the Club to ensure the pitch and clubhouse were ready for the Summer season. Luckily the weather was fine and the good number of Club volunteers turning out ensured everything was achieved in record time.

The players present then undertook their first training session in the nets – and adjourned to The Cricketers Inn for some refreshments after all their efforts!

The recent exceptionally wet weather has prevented Lee Padwick – our Groundsman – from even starting to roll the square and based on the current conditions, it is unlikely the square will be playable before early May. Scheduled Friendly warm up matches have been postponed and the only outdoor training possible so far has been in the nets.

Juniors’ training evenings are planned to commence during the week beginning April 15th with the first Club BBQ evening on Friday April 19th. Friday evening training incorporates Cricket Hoppers (U7s), U9s (boys & girls) and U11s training. Anyone interested in watching this spectacle is welcome to attend and enjoy the BBQ, bar and enthusiastic activities on the outfield.

In other exciting news, our Ladies Softball Team won the Dummer Cricket Indoor League and progressed to the Hampshire County Indoor W10 Finals.

EMWCC Ladies’ Captain Charlie Gloyn reports:

It has been a busy and productive Winter season for the Easton Ladies’ team.  On Sunday evenings they have been fighting through the rankings of the Dummer Indoor League, which has grown to 12 participating teams from opposition clubs across Hampshire. The competition culminated in a big Final Festival on Sunday 17th March between the top 6 teams: Easton, Overton, Oakley, South Winchester, Hartley Wintney and Fair Oak. Easton won their first match against Overton in a closely contested battle: (Easton 256 – 3 v. Overton 244 – 3) and then saw off their opponents in the second round in the narrowest of victories: (Oakley 239 – 2 v. Easton 245 – 4), that got them through to the competition Final against South Winchester. Ironically the Final turned out to be a far easier match than the earlier rounds and Easton was able to comfortably win to take the Regional Championship: (Easton 271 – 2 v. South Winchester 232 – 1).

A great achievement on the part of the EMWCC Ladies, ending in first position out of the 12 Dummer League teams.  As Regional Champions they qualified for the Hampshire County Indoor W10 Finals at Gang Warily on Sunday 14th April against Clanfield CC and Cadnam CC, who had both won their respective Regional Indoor Leagues too. Competition was fierce in both matches with some excellent bowling and fielding from the Easton Ladies. However catches win matches and too many wickets fell as they faced some exceptional bowlers from the opposition and fell short of putting enough runs on the scoresheet.

The EMWC Ladies can be proud to finish ranked in 3rd place overall in Hampshire, taking home their bronze medals from the Winter Indoor League. They are now focusing their sights on their real goal: Retaining their place as winners of the outdoor Summer League for the third year running.     Good luck Ladies!!

The Club fields three Men’s teams, playing at all levels within the Hampshire Cricket League on a Saturday afternoon and training on Thursday evenings, one Ladies Softball team training on a Tuesday evening and Juniors (Girls and Boys) squads from U15s to U7s training on Monday, Wednesday or Friday evenings, depending on their age grouping with matches on Sundays and sometimes during the week. A total of 15 teams entails the Club hiring and borrowing pitches from local schools and cricket clubs, to host all the Home games.
