News Update – November 23
Juniors Presentation Evening 2023
On Saturday September 23rd 150 junior players, parents and coaches attended the annual EMWCC Juniors Presentation Evening. A fine warm evening enabled everyone to enjoy the BBQ and bar outside around the cricket pitch.
The Club would not be able to field teams from U9s to U15s, both girls and boys, without the support of many of the parents who take on team management, administration and coaching roles. Parent coaches have undertaken the Level 1 ECB Cricket Coaching Course. They are supported by the Club’s professional coach Ian Stuart. Our Juniors’ Manager Rhi Kerr, Fixtures Secretary Laura Skilton and senior parent coach Ben Gillings are all responsible for the huge task of underpinning the day to day management of the activities of parents, providing coaching and games throughout the season. Our Child Welfare Officer, Bruce Hansen, also holds an essential role for any Club hosting a juniors’ section. The Club is planning to take cricket coaching sessions into some of the local primary schools next summer, to give more children in the Itchen Valley the opportunity to experience playing cricket.
EMWCC is very grateful to Jude’s Ice Cream for providing generous support to the Club for some of the costs of running this juniors programme; we look forward to working with them again next season.
The Awards were presented by Ben Gillings and Adam Murch introduced the evening. This year George Mann, an Easton resident, ex player, Cricket Club Vice President and long term supporter of the Club has donated four new Juniors’ Awards. They have been exquisitely designed and made by George himself and will be a valued long-term addition to the Club’s trophy cabinet. Adam reported that George joined the Club in 1981 and had been a juniors’ coach long before the current setup; there had only been around 40 juniors players in those days. Following a career in IT, George has extensively recorded and written about the ecology of the River Itchen and the flora & fauna in the beautiful Itchen Valley.
George is pictured with the Awards winners. The George Mann Batting Award was presented to Jonathan Elliot; the Bowling Award to Charlie Wolfe; the Fielding Award to Imogen Wilson; and the Wicket Keeping Award was presented to Alfie Nicholson, who was unable to attend. Eddie Hansen was awarded the Eric Thompson Cup and Casper Wilson the Dave Purse Memorial Cup.
We would like to thank Rhi Kerr for all her amazing work with the Juniors at the Club over the last 3 years; Rhi will be retiring from her role at the end of this year and Laura Skilton will be taking it over.
The Club’s AGM will be held at 5.30pm on Wednesday November 22nd. All members are welcome to attend to hear the news of the Club for the year to September 2023.
