Ian Stuart, Our Professional Coach

Ian can often be seen in the nets, either coaching cohorts of club players or his clients through his coaching academy, Coaching for Greater Understanding (CFGU).

Ian first honed his skills as a youngster in his native Natal in South Africa. Whilst then studying at Exeter University he played for Exeter and represented the English Universities. He has represented Dorset in the Minor Counties Championship and Sutton CC in the Surrey Championship League. In South Africa he captained and played for Pinetown CC in their Premier League. More latterly Ian has represented Hampshire Over 50s and occasionally turns out for an EMWCC XI.

Ian has an extensive coaching portfolio.  His qualifications include an English Cricket Board (ECB) Level 3 coach and more recently an International Elite Coach Course. In 2000 Ian was the European Development Manager for the International Cricket Council (ICC). He has coached within various Hampshire players’ pathways; he headed up the Hampshire Emerging Player Programme for 5 years and for 30 years has been an ECB Coach Developer, tutoring within the Hampshire Coach Development Programme.

Additionally, Ian coaches the Hampshire visually impaired and blind cricketers; a role he feels is a privilege, working with passionate cricketers that show incredible fortitude and positivity towards learning, participating and competing.

Ian has taught in various local schools and runs his own coaching academy CFGU, with the philosophy of the ‘holistic development’ of each individual, aiming to sustain their love, learning and passion for the game into adult life. Ian observed that recently 7 players all educated at Henry Beaufort School had represented EMWCC’s 1st XI.

Ian reports he has coached at EMWCC for over 18 years and has seen considerable development during that time. The wonderful facilities at the club are testament to so many volunteers who have held positions within both the Junior and Senior sections. Without this volunteer workforce, the Club could not have sustained its ongoing developments nor provided so much for players to enjoy, through playing for a truly supportive and special Club.
