On Sunday August 2nd the third annual MCC vs EMWCC match was held in conjunction with the club’s celebrations for the 80th Anniversary. Club President Richard Roth, along with his brother David and their families, travelled down to the club from Scotland and London respectively to support the day. The newly constructed steps to the clubhouse, kindly funded by the Roth family in memory of their late father and Club President John, were officially opened by both Richard & David.
The MCC team was captained by Richard Arscott, an EMWCC coach with a son playing for the Club Juniors. EMWCC won the toss and elected to field. The MCC batted well – but steadily – and declared on 251 runs for 3 wickets off 51 overs. The home team, captained by 1st team captain Ben Stanbrook, chased the total with vigour and scored 252 for 6 and won the game by 4 wickets, with a few overs of the game remaining. The outstanding performance of the day was EMWCC’S Olly Boulton, who scored 152 runs not out. The MCC generously presented EMWCC with a commemorative shield acknowledging the 80th Anniversary of the club.

A BBQ was available for lunch for both players and spectators and then a traditional cricket tea with homemade cakes was provided as well. The club commissioned orange bucket hats commemorating ’80 years not out’, which added a splash of colour to the day. Many local residents, ex-players and those associated with the club over the years attended throughout the very enjoyable day.
In other news, the club now has a National Champion playing for it! 17 year old Noah Gillings plays for the Hampshire D40 team, which is the senior Hampshire Disability team. The D40 Quest competition, which Hampshire won, is the National County Competition and having won their southern group, they beat Lancashire in the final, played at Kidderminster CC. Well done Noah!
EMWCC’s multi-talented Club Secretary, George Marshall-James, was one of the commentators on national radio’s TalkSPORT for the Cawston Press Village Cup Final, played at Lord’s cricket ground last month. George was one of a team of commentators for the match, won by Cuckney CC.
The Juniors’ Presentation Evening was held on Friday September 4th and was well attended, as usual. The two Junior Club Cups were presented by Club Chairman, Adrian Lee, along with the four George Mann Trophies, generously handmade and donated by the village resident. Harry Austen won the Spirit of Cricket Cup and Oliver Arscott won the Most Promising Junior Cup.

To close the club’s very busy summer of cricket the annual club finale, the Badger inter-club celebration match and social evening followed the next day. Trophies were presented by 2nd team captain Aaron Burton. The strength of the Juniors’ section is evidenced by four awards going to juniors who play in the senior teams – Joe Gillings, Sam Boulton, Alfie Nicholson and Harry Austen.
The club is very grateful for the many hard working and committed locals, parents and volunteers who have contributed to the club throughout the summer in all sorts of different ways; whether coaching, supporting, administering or running the bar & BBQ at the Clubhouse. It has been a very successful season all round, taking advantage of the amazing summer weather we have enjoyed.
