On Saturday 6th September EMWCC’s annual Badger Memorial Match was played; this is an inter-club friendly incorporating players from across the Adults and Juniors sections and played in memory of Steve (Badger) Green. Badger, as he was widely known, was a 1st team player and was the team and club captain until his untimely death, aged just 44. He worked tirelessly to promote the club and encourage youngsters to play cricket in the valley.
Following the celebration BBQ, the Annual Players’ Awards were presented by Club Captain Seb Stannard. Amongst those receiving awards, 1st team captain Ben Stanbrook was recognised as he has enjoyed a stellar summer season, both with the bat and in the field. He was presented with the Brian Neville Fielding Cup for his 11 catches and 3 run outs. The Best Batter was also Ben with an average of 91.7 over the season. The Captain’s Cup went to Oscar Eyssens, who took 33 wickets from his bowling in all forms of the game.

The glorious weather on the Saturday was followed by the threat of rain showers throughout the Sunday, when EMWCC hosted an MCC touring side in the annual match. The day was organised by George Burnand, who provided the tea and even baked a delicious cake himself! The lunchtime BBQ run by Adam Murch was also very popular with players and spectators. The MCC team was captained by EMWCC’s very own club coach and MCC member, Ian Stuart. Ian has been coaching at the club for over 20 years. He said it was an honour to be asked to captain the MCC team and it was very gratifying to see so many players he has coached over the years still enjoying playing cricket at the club and he was confident the strong Juniors’ set up is producing yet more able and talented players for the club.
EMWCC won the toss and elected to bowl first. Opening bowler Jordon Banks then took a spectacular one handed catch off his own bowling. At one point the MCC was 138 for 6; however they then rallied with an excellent 121 not out from Chris Marrow, who hit the ball to all parts of the pitch and even broke his bat in the process! The final MCC score was 260, with Jordon and Ollie Boulton both taking 3 catches. After this fantastic effort with the ball Easton went out to bat against a talented MCC side which had a variety of different bowling styles at their disposal. Despite the valiant efforts from EMWCC to take MCC to the final thirty minutes of the day to battle for the draw, Easton were unfortunately all bowled out for 129.
