News Update – September 2024

The annual Sixes tournament, sponsored by Knight Frank, was held on a lovely Friday on July 26th this year. The colourful playing shirts ensured the eight teams could be easily identified throughout the tournament and the event was well attended by local supporters and spectators. The bar was provided jointly by The Plough, Itchen Abbas and The Cricketers Inn, Easton and Paul Moffatt’s hog roast was enjoyed by all during the day.

The teams competing were all sponsored by local businesses. New teams this year included Coopah Run Coach, a running App which provides personalised training plans for runners of all abilities; Client Server Titans (IT recruitment); and Dr Vegan (vegan proteins and supplements).

The first semi-final was between Fenwick Elliot (solicitors) in yellow and Anglesea Capital (real estate asset management) in blue. Fenwick Elliot won the game by 19 runs. The second semi-final was between Dr Vegan in turquoise and The Winchester Hotel in purple; Dr Vegan was victorious by 33 runs. The final was a closely fought contest; Fenwick Elliot won the toss and elected to bat. Gaz Shreuder quickly retired on 23 runs and the innings closed on 71 for 3.  Dr Vegan responded well and needed a 6 off the final ball to win the game but Fenwick Elliott managed to restrict them to a single run and to win the game. The Sixes Cup was presented by Club Chairman, Adrian Lee, and the Fenwick Elliot team captain, Monty Randle, paid tribute to all his team mates for their performances and was thrilled to be back on the winners’ podium after an absence of a few years.

At lunch players and spectators were very pleased to be joined by the Club President, John Roth, now aged 103 and the oldest and longest standing member of the MCC. John brought along his wife, Daphne, now a mere 99 years old! They had travelled to the Sixes from London accompanied by their son, Richard Roth, and were greeted during the afternoon by many Club members and local families.

During the afternoon Olly Boulton, aged 17, was presented with the Club’s quartered cap in recognition of the two centuries he has scored for the club this season for the XI and XXII.

It is gratifying for the many committed and hard-working coaches and managers within the Juniors’ section that the Club teams fielded seven or eight juniors most weeks throughout the summer, playing across all the Men’s teams. Sometimes playing in the same team as their dads, which is generally enjoyable for both generations, but can become a bit more tricky when the boys try to advise their dads on tactics, shot selection etc!

This season the Club’s newly formed U15’s boys team won the Regional North U15’s Cup played at Ropley CC versus Rowledge CC. Congratulations to team manager and senior parent coach Ben Gillings on this fantastic achievement with his team.On Sunday September 1st the club will be hosting the MCC in a declaration fixture starting at 10:30 am. All spectators are welcome to come along and support the EMWCC team; the bar and BBQ will be open all day.
